Available medications for treating Crohn's disease

There are 4 main types of medications that can be used to treat Crohn's disease (CD) depending on the severity of the disease. These are listed below.

Corticosteroids. Steroids are treatments used to suppress the immune system and help reduce inflammation. They are sometimes used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as CD. They are often used to treat flares.

Immunomodulators. Immunomodulators work on the immune system to decrease inflammation.

Aminosalicylates (5-ASAs). Aminosalicylates are also anti-inflammatory drugs, used mostly in mild to moderate disease.

Biologics. Biologics are drugs derived from living cells that copy the effects of substances naturally made by your body's immune system. Biologics are designed to reduce inflammation by blocking specific parts of the immune system that play a role in inflammation. Biologics are taken by injection under the skin (a shot) or given intravenously (IV).

No one therapy is right for every person who has CD. What works well for you might not work as well for someone else.

Please note that not all options have FDA approval for the treatment of CD.

Is CIMZIA an option for you?

CIMZIA, a biologic medication, has been shown in clinical trials to work for many adult patients with moderate to severe CD and could be right for you. However, your doctor is your first and best guide to diagnose your CD and help with your treatment plan. Make sure he or she understands your concerns, your hopes for treatment, your current symptoms and their severity, and your general health. Talk to your doctor about what may be right for you.
